CUSTOM TANK & PRESSURE VESSEL HEADS
A Century of Craftsmanship
Our Custom Tank & Pressure Vessel Heads
Steel tank heads are essential for a variety of industries, from pharmaceutical and chemical processing to food and beverage storage. Brighton Tru-Edge is a leading manufacturer of custom tank heads and pressure vessel heads, offering a wide range of options to meet the unique needs of our customers. Our experienced team will work with you to design a tank head that meets your precise specifications, ensuring that your finished product is of the highest quality. With Brighton Tru-Edge, you can be confident that you’re getting the best possible product for your application. Here are the types of tank heads we can manufacture for you.
2:1 Elliptical Heads
The 2:1 elliptical heads are used extensively for pressure vessels. For this type of head, the depth of tank head is one-quarter of the vessel’s internal diameter. With its reduced metal thickness, elliptical tank heads offer an economic solution for medium-pressure tanks. These can be custom-formed from:
- Carbon steel
- Stainless steel
- Clad
- Other ferrous and non-ferrous metals and alloys
90/17 Style 2:1 Elliptical Tank Heads
The 90/17 style head is an acceptable approximation of a 2:1 Elliptical per ASME Section VIII Div. 1 UG 32.
ASME 80/10 Tank Heads
With the ASME 80/10 head, the inside dish radius is 80% of the diameter and the inside knuckle radius is 10% of the diameter. Our 80/10 tank heads meet all the requirements of the ASME pressure vessel code.
ASME Flanged & Dished Tank Heads
The tolerances for these flanged and dished (F&D) heads comply with ASME requirements. The tank heads may be custom-formed from:
- Carbon steel
- Stainless steel
- Clad
- Other ferrous and non-ferrous metals and alloys
The inside dish radius is typically 100% of the diameter, and the inside knuckle radius is at least 6% of the diameter.
When pressure is mild and overall height is important, F&D heads are typically employed.
Conical Tank Heads
Conical heads are often used for process equipment, including evaporators, spray driers, crystallizers, and settling tanks. These types of heads enable the accumulation and removal of solids at the bottom of the head. Conical sections can be formed on rolling equipment that is used to roll cylindrical shells.
Dished-Only Tank Heads
Dished-only tank heads are used in a variety of applications, including pressure vessels, reinforcement pads, domed roofs for large storage tanks, vacuum chambers, wear plates, and liners. These tank heads are made from:
- Carbon steel
- Stainless steel
- Clad
- Aluminum
- Other ferrous and non-ferrous alloys
Flanged-Only Tank Heads
The flanged-only tank heads are often used for liquid storage, especially gas and petroleum products. They are a flat head with a knuckle radius. Typically, they are used for non-code applications, but if the IKR is a minimum of 3x the thickness, then they can be used for ASME usage.
Flared & Dished Tank Heads
These flared and dished heads are used in industrial non-code applications, including bolt-on covers, hinged covers, tank ends, and baffles. They are formed from:
- Carbon steel
- Stainless steel
- Aluminum
- Other ferrous and non-ferrous alloys
Reversed-Flanged & Dished Tank Heads
Reversed flanged and dished tank heads are comprised of both a concave dish radius and a knuckle radius. They are often used on the ends of vessels that face against a plane surface, such as steel vessels on concrete slabs. These tank heads offer the advantage of a load-bearing surface as well as the additional strength from dishing.
Shallow Tank Heads
The radius of a shallow head is greater than the outside diameter. Shallow tank heads are primarily used for horizontal storage tanks and are not permitted in vessels that must meet pressure-code requirements.
Standard Flanged & Dished Tank Heads
Standard flanged and dished heads are used for storage tanks in situations where ASME code requirements aren’t applicable. The tank heads may be formed from:
- Carbon steel
- Stainless steel
- Aluminum
- Other ferrous and non-ferrous alloys
The inside dish radius is typically 100% of the diameter, and the inside knuckle radius is a minimum of three times the material thickness.
Toriconical Tank Heads
Toriconical heads are different from conical heads in that they have a knuckle radius at the large end. Toriconical heads uniformly distribute localized stresses and reduce them in the area near where the cone and the shell join. Toriconical tank heads are often used in hoppers and towers.
Tru-Cut 3D Nozzle Hole Cutting
The next evolution of our industry’s best tank head manufacturing is pre-cut nozzle holes to save manual labor, eliminate costly mistakes, and increase your project profitability.
